EDUCATION

Increase access to more equitable pathways to quality education for Latinos

Ceiba - LEDC Partners:

Run high performing child care centers, charter schools, after school programs and 2-year colleges, including one of the only two Hispanic Serving Institutions in PA

Use a Comprehensive approach to early childhood education:

  • Regional conference on Early Childhood Education

  • CDA, AA, and Director Credential Preparation

  • Mobile Preschool technical assistance to home care providers and parents

Accept, advocate for, and support the role of public charter schools in providing quality education

Challenges

  • Latinos make up 21% of school children in the Philadelphia School District yet only 4% of its teachers

  • Schools in the Philadelphia area are among the most segregated in the country, especially for Latino students, according to the Century Foundation

  • Latino kids are at high risk of multiple traumas, and of acting out. More kids in Philadelphia experience four or more childhood traumas compared to kids in the rest of the nation

Opportunities

Increase enrollment in Early Childhood Education and strengthen the development of professional bilingual and culturally competent staff.

  • Nurture opportunities for trauma informed services.

  • Work with the Commonwealth of PA and the Building Trades to:

    • Increase representation of BIPOC populations in apprenticeships that lead to a career in the trades.

    • Align Career Technical Education (CTE) curricula with requirements for city licenses and union apprenticeships.
